Can adopting and maintaining a healthy lifestyle be less of a chore and more enjoyable? Isn’t health all about eating more veggies and fruits, and stay fit by walking 10,000 steps a day or sweating out at the gym? The mantra ‘diet and exercise’ we hear every time we talk about health and fitness.
Absolutely true! However, the experience is far from “thrilling”, especially when it comes to making your family do the same. As a parent, it is your responsibility to ensure that your family adopts a healthy lifestyle, not just you. Moreover, it is always easier to get the kids started (on anything for that matter) when they are still young.
How do you make the whole experience an enjoyable one for everyone in the family? Here are a few simple tips:
Focus on the benefits
Your target should be better health which means more energy, higher immunity and lesser incidence of sickness.A great slim body is a desirable side effect.Others would be the likes of youthful looks, healthy hair, glowing skin and so on. Needless to say, the thought of a slimmer, younger and better looking you is definitely thrilling!

Combine family fun with physical activity
How do you keep the kids physically active without making it sound like an “exercise”? Play outdoor games with them.choose any sport which they like.Create a schedule and stick to it.Do not skip the activity for excuses such as exams (unless your child is sitting for a common exam the next day).Physical exercise has been proven to sharpen your brain and helps you perform better at school or work.
Don’t get obsessed with numbers
Walk 10,000 steps a day, drink at least 8 glasses of water, eat 4-6 servings of fruits and veggies…All these numbers are great. But my personal opinion is that they make healthy living more like a chore. How do you make it more enjoyable? Alternate among different activities – jogging, walking on the treadmill, swimming, cycling, outdoor games, yoga, walking, skipping or even running around with the kids.Once you get into the habit, you will be amazed at the options that open up before you.

Make it part of the schedule
Choose a time that is most convenient for you and stick to a routine. Do this for a couple of months and trust me, you will get addicted. There are chances that you might get withdrawal symptoms if you skip! That’s what happened to me when I went on a holiday last time. I did walk a lot but never got a chance to swim. I was longing to get back home and head for the swimming pool. It felt so good to swim after almost a month. That brings us to the next point…
Don’t stop during vacations
If you want to drive home the point that physical exercise is fun, you have to do it during holidays as well. Make sure you pack your rackets, skipping rope, exercise band, or swimming gear- anything that you feel will be useful and suited to the place. Or the least you can do is to avoid the cab and walk around wherever possible. That way you would also get to know the place better.

You don’t have to count the number of glasses, just drink water BEFORE you get thirsty. If you are thirsty it means you are already dehydrated. The fun way to do it is to keep a fancy cup or water bottle of your favorite color or with interesting words like “pick me up” at your desk. That would help you remember. Do the same for the kids.
Get your fingers sticky
If your food cravings take over, it is better to give in once in a while. If your mouth is watering at the sight of that cupcake or ice cream, go for it by all means. Or else, you would end up craving more and binge when you finally get your hands on it. The key is to limit the intake and not totally deprive yourself. One way is to share which is also fun (and romantic too, if it’s with your partner!)
I’m sure you will agree with me that these can easily be done. Take one step at a time and be consistent. Good luck for a thrilling lifestyle change!
