Nadan Chicken Curry

Kerala chicken curry, also called nadan chicken curry is a specialty of Kerala, one of the Southern Indian states.

This simple chicken curry is full of delicious flavors from coconut oil, fresh coconut, fennel seeds and other Indian spices.

Chicken thighs

Coconut oil

Lemon juice

Grated coconut

Fennel seeds


Pearl onions

Marinate chicken thighs with Kashmiri chili powder, garam masala, salt, pepper and lemon juice.

Step 1: Marinate

Sauté onions and curry leaves in coconut oil. Add minced ginger and garlic and sauté until it browns.

Step 2: Make The Gravy

Add the marinated chicken thighs and sauté  for 5 minutes.  Add all the spices and water.

Bring the curry to a boil. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes or until chicken is cooked.

Blend grated coconut with fennel seeds and water. Add to the gravy along with garam masala.

Step 3: Add Coconut Paste

Sauté dry chilies, pearl onions and curry leaves in coconut oil. Mix into the curry.

Step 4: Tempering

Turn off the flame.  Serve with white/brown rice, appam, dosa, chapathi or any bread of your choice.
