1. Roast the garlic

Slice the garlic cloves and sauté in olive oil. Roast on low flame until browned.

(Sometimes when I roast garlic in the oven for roasted garlic sauce, I roast a big batch of garlic and freeze some to use for this sauce later. Saves some time and an extra pan to wash.)

2. Blend the garlic, oil and lemon juice

Once the garlic cools down, blend it along with the oil and lemon juice. You may not get a smooth mixture unless you have a small blender.

The solution is to add a couple of spoons of the yogurt and blend to get a smooth sauce.

3. Whip up with yogurt, salt and black pepper

Add the rest of the yogurt with salt and pepper and whisk until combined. Here’s your SILKY SMOOTH garlic yogurt sauce!

4. Garnish with dill

Chop up dill and mix in. I love dill because it gives a unique flavor to yogurt sauces like tzatziki. You can use other herbs like parsley and mint, too.

Sometimes I like to sprinkle some red pepper flakes or cumin if I’m in the mood for a spicy Greek yogurt sauce, like, to pair with a dish like chicken shawarma.

Frequently asked questions about garlic Greek yogurt sauce

Is this garlic yogurt sauce healthy?

This garlic yogurt sauce is made with simple, wholesome ingredients that offer both flavor and nutrition. Greek yogurt provides protein and probiotics, while garlic is known for its antioxidant and heart-health benefits. Using just a small amount of olive oil keeps it light while still adding depth of flavor.

Why roast garlic instead of using it raw?

Roasting garlic removes its sharp, pungent bite and brings out a mellow, slightly sweet flavor. This means you can use more garlic in this roasted garlic yogurt sauce, making it richer in both taste and nutritional benefits—without overpowering the yogurt.

Can I use regular yogurt instead of Greek yogurt?

Yes, you can use regular yogurt, but Greek yogurt is thicker and creamier, which gives this garlic yogurt sauce a better texture. If using regular yogurt, strain it using a cheese cloth to avoid a runny sauce.

Can you make this ahead?

Yes! This yogurt garlic sauce actually tastes better after resting for a few hours. Store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 to 4 days and use it throughout the week for quick, healthy meals. It is not suitable for freezing.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using raw garlic (too sharp and overpowering)
  • Adding too much oil to roast garlic
  • Using thin yogurt (results in runny sauce)
  • Skipping resting time
